Eat This - Not That

Here are some surprises about the food and drink you eat every day and how they can affect your teeth. Some studies even show that some of these, over time,  can do more permanent damage to your teeth than tobacco. You may be more than a little surprised at how many of these items you and your children have every day.

DRIED FRUITS

Often dried fruit is considered to be a healthy treat. While it may hold up better than straight candy, this dental disaster contains sticky sugars that may have your dentist looking for the culprit. Sadly, these little sugar bits are sprinkled in unlikely places like salads, yogurt parfaits, and granolas – making them a sneaky dental danger. Instead, try to opt into fresh fruit whenever possible.

SPORTS DRINKS

Sports drinks are a favorite past time of parents and kids alike. They can help hydrate you during sports evens or after a long bout at the gym. But these drinks are typically high in calories and in acid content. This acid content can break down the enamel of your teeth, leading to a little extra dental work need in your next visit. Not only to they pack in acids, but they bring along a company of sugars as well. And we all know how extra sugar in your diet can lead to more cavities. Instead, grab a hold of a low calorie, low sugar, low acid sports drink. Or flavored sparkling waters also do a great job of giving hydration and flavor!

YOUR FAVORITE – BLEACHED BREAD

I know, I know…it’s so wonderful. White bread is a staple of most households. From PB&J’s to grilled cheese, kids love white bread. However, white bread has a much larger amount of sugar than any other type of bread. This bread often gets stuck within children’s teeth and can stay there for days. These pieces of bread break down and become food for bacteria in their mouth. Whenever possible select whole grain bread when making your grocery list.
